How do you eat an elephant?

One bit at a time silly.

How many of you have an elephant in your life?  Maybe it is in your career?  Or is it a big project, a career change, or something as simple as that next networking meeting you are supposed to go to.  For me, it is almost always the later.  I am someone who has horrible social anxiety, I mean BAD.  I have sat in a parking lot at an event that looked like it might have had “too many” people and turned around and left back for home, my safe zone.  I have been stuck against a wall trying to stay out of the way, and not being able to move.  If you ask people though, I think many would say I am rather social…. Is it all just smoke and mirrors?  Nope, I just think of it as that elephant.  The mistake a lot of people make is thinking they must go into a networking event like the center of attention, and the fear of that expectation can be paralyzing.  Or they try to work a room to “meet” as many people as possible.  The problem with that is that most cannot remember everyone they met, or they end up not making connections because they tried to do too much.

So, what do you do?  How do you eat that elephant?  I tell people, especially when coaching my clients, make a goal of meeting two to three people that you can introduce yourself to, have a genuine beneficial conversation, get contact information, and plan to follow up with a one on one meeting soon.  This is the type of networking that will be meaningful and help build needed and desired business, and maybe personal, relationships.  People want to know about you, who you are, what it is you do, and why.  The last thing they want to do it walk away from the event with a stack of business cards of people they will not remember.

Next time you get ready to go to that event and you start to feel anxious, just remember… take small bites.

There are many sayings about the company we keep. My favorite is “be sure to know who is in your boat, are they rowing with you or drilling holes while you’re not watching?”.  I’m here to ask you today: who’s in your boat?  I’ve found that oftentimes as women and mothers, we choose to make a lot of sacrifices. Usually, at the expense of our own well-being. We all have that friend who leaves us with less energy than we had going in, or that family member who has to point out the negative in everything. Maybe you know someone who you feel as though you are in competition with. Whatever the feeling, and whoever the person is, they are robbing you of joy.

I’m here today to tell you that it’s okay to choose who you want to be around. It’s okay to choose to not be around any of those people I mentioned above. I’ve recently realized that when you’re doing great things, not everyone will be your biggest fan. AND THAT’S OKAY. We all have own life experiences and goals. Ladies, I’m not even talking about huge goals here – maybe it’s the goal of going for a walk today. Maybe it’s the goal of NOT having wine with dinner tonight.  My point is, whatever your goal, choose to surround yourself with people who support that goal.

Here’s the thing:  they may not even know they are supporting your goal. They may just be a natural support system by way of WHO they are.  That friend who is happy. Who is positive. Who has a genuine interest in your friendship. When it comes to protecting your mindset, it’s okay to be selfish! Let me say that one more time:  IT’S OKAY TO BE SELFISH.  It’s imperative that you choose who to surround yourself with.  They say you are most like the 5 people you hang around the most (whoever they are).

Two months ago, I quit my full-time demanding career. This was a crazy HUGE scary decision. (more on that later). When I started to think about leaving my career, I was VERY selective in who I discussed the decision with. I purposely chose to surround myself with women who saw my bigger purpose. These women sent me quotes, and voice texts and books to read. These women cried with me and prayed with me. These women who supported my decision and breathed belief into me.  Women who would tell me “you’re crazy! And it’s going to be great!” And you know what? Two months later, it IS great and I WAS crazy and those women are STILL the women I talk to everyday.

So, let me ask you again, who’s in your boat? Are they rowing with you or drilling holes? Take a moment and write down the 5 individuals you are closest to on a daily basis. If you’re like me, one glance at the names and you will know who is draining your energy and who is feeding your energy.  Choose wisely. Choose Joy. If you need someone else to sit beside you and row with you for awhile – I’m here. One of the best things we can do for each other is to take that positive influence and pass it on.

What’s your passion?

Have you ever wanted more? That’s a loaded question, right? And what exactly does more mean? In a world where we are surrounded by Pinterest-worthy quotes about following our passion and seeking our “best life”, it is easy to feel inadequate. I remember asking myself the same question.  “Don’t I want more?” My answer truly was – I don’t know. More what? What does that even mean? Am I missing out on some big mysterious life question? Or even worse – the big mysterious answer?

I once read a quote (it is definitely Pinterest worthy; in fact, that may have been where I read it). This quote said something profound about following what your passion is and never working another day in your life. Not working another day? I’ll take that please! One serving of passion coming right up!

But seriously… What is your passion? If you’re anything like me, you have no idea.  I’ll admit, I have a love/hate relationship with social media. I absolutely love being able to spy on my teenagers, watch videos, read inspiring stories, laugh at funny jokes and post pictures of my babies berry stained face and her raspberry topped fingers waving at the camera. However, I also recognize the enormous amount of pressure that social media can create. It seems like a great idea to find your passion; but who has time when we’re busy cleaning toothpaste out of our hair, signing a field trip permission slip, and drinking coffee, all while driving with one knee on my way to work.

Ladies, I’m gonna be honest. Like, REAL honest. Somedays, I rock my life. I’m up early make it to the gym, pack school lunches, feed my dogs (they appreciate that, I’m sure) and maybe even remember to mail my bills when I rush out the door.  However, more often than not, I barely have time to shower, we’ve had no milk for days, I’m cooking chicken nuggets for dinner for the 3rd time that week, and those bills I’m paying are for last month, not this month.  Find my passion? Let me remember to look for that while I’m carpooling and cleaning and grocery shopping and… oh yea, working.

But oh wow, do we have something in store for YOU. A time out. A day of inspiration, of sisterhood, of JOY (and maybe even a few mimosas).  We are bringing you Illuminate Wenatchee. A fun filled, dynamic day for women of this valley to stop, breathe, and maybe, just maybe figure out that they have already found their passion and are gratefully living it.

Illuminate Wenatchee Women’s Conference is designed for US. For YOU. For the stay at home mom, the working mom, the grand mom, or maybe the no-mom (you know, women who don’t have kids).  The busy professional, the volunteer, the entrepreneur. WOMEN. This conference is for WOMEN.  October 19th and 20th. Join us!
